DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (UKTN) — Gunmen opened fire at a bazaar in the southwestern Iranian city of Izeh on Wednesday, killing at least five people and injuring civilians and security forces, state television reported.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the attack or if it was related to the nationwide protests that have rocked Iran over the past two months. According to state television, another 10 people were injured in the shooting, including security forces.

State television said groups of several dozen protesters had gathered in various parts of Izeh late Wednesday, chanting anti-government slogans and throwing stones at police, who fired tear gas to disperse them.

Violent clashes have erupted around some protests, while security forces have cracked down on dissent. Iran has also seen a number of recent attacks blamed on separatists and Islamist extremists, including a shooting at a major Shia shrine last month that left more than a dozen people dead.
