John Wayne said of Clark Gable:[He’s] very handsome. This is one guy who doesn’t need Hollywood to make him look good. But Gable is an idiot. Do you know why Gabel is an actor? It’s the only thing he’s smart enough to do.” Such was his assessment of the Gone with the Wind star, who worked with Duke’s longtime collaborator, director John Ford.

In 1953, Clark Gable — who died today 62 years ago — starred opposite Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly in Mogambo. The romantic adventure was filmed in tropical Africa and was a remake of the leading man’s Red Dust, in which he played the same role as a big-game hunter two decades earlier.

The film’s director, Ford, was a notorious character who often humiliated and baited his crew to get better performances from them. During production, he would make remarks about Gable’s age and weathered appearance. The actor even came out in protest of the director’s treatment of Gardner.

Wayne saw himself as more of a star than an actor, which was at odds with Gable’s view of being theatrical.

I’m not acting at all, Duke said. And I’ve been selling hell since I started. I’ve never been one of those young stage boys. This arty crowd has only superficial brilliance anyway. True art is primary emotion. If a scene is treated with simplicity–and I don’t mean simplicity–it’ll be good and know it The audience “.
