Grizzlies’ Jaren Jackson Jr. will make his season debut against Pelicans Tuesday night, according to the report

The Memphis Grizzlies are getting some frontcourt reinforcements soon as big man Jaren Jackson Jr. is expected to make his season debut against the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday. according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report.

Jackson underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot in June and has since recovered. Adding him to a Memphis team that already started 9-5 will only improve that team, but given that Jackson hasn’t had any real game action since last season’s playoffs, it wouldn’t be surprising if he takes some would be time to re-acclimatize.

The last time we saw Jackson, he was averaging 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and a league-leading 2.3 blocks per game. One of the top defensive big men in the league, he finished last season as a Defensive Player of the Year finalist and was named to the All-Defensive First Team. The Grizzlies are simply better on defense when Jackson is down, allowing 4.8 fewer points when he is down. If there’s one hit to Jackson’s defensive play, it’s his talent for fouls, which can injure the Grizzlies when he sits for large chunks of the game. But since he’s only 22 and entering his fifth season, he’s sure to improve in that area.

On offense, Jackson can score both at the edge and in the middle, and while he struggled to hit his 3-point mark consistently last season, he’s shown in the past that he can also score off the arc can be reliable. Combine all of that together and it gives the Grizzlies another versatile scoring threat.

Given Jackson’s injury history, Memphis will likely be wary of going out of the gates. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him with a minute limit until he’s fully stripped of the grate, but if he’s ready to get dressed again, Memphis will only help amplify his early-season success.
