New Delhi: The vice-captain of the Nepalese national cricket team, Rohit Paudel, has been promoted as the captain of the team, replacing Sandeep Lamichhane. This announcement was made late Friday evening. The Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) has selected Poudel to lead the national team in place of rape accused Sandeep Lamichhane. The Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) tweeted, “Rohit Paudel has been appointed as the captain of the national cricket team.”
Lamichhane accused of rape
Lamichhane, 22, was fired by the Himalayan Nation’s cricket body on September 7 after he was accused of raping a minor. Lamichhane is currently facing charges under Section 219 of the Criminal Code (2074). If the charges are proved, they will be imprisoned for 10 to 12 years. The new captain, 20-year-old Poudel, will lead Nepal in a three-match One Day International bilateral series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is scheduled to take place on November 14, 16 and 18 at the TU ground in Kirtipur.
Nepalese player with highest run scorer
Poudel also holds the record for the highest run-scorer as a Nepalese player in a One Day International (ODI) series. Playing against Papua New Guinea last year, Poudel scored 126 runs in 107 balls with the help of 7 fours and 4 sixes. The same record was in the name of Paras Khadka, former captain of the Nepal team. Khadka had managed to score 115 runs in 109 balls in a match against UAE in the year 2019. Khadka is also the first Nepalese player to cross the century mark in ODIs.
great feat at a young age
The new captain Paudel made his debut for the Nepalese national team in 2018 in an ODI against the Netherlands. He also holds the record as the fourth youngest Nepalese player to make it to the national team. Paudel was 15 years and 335 days old at the time of his debut, making him the second youngest international to make an international series debut. The record for the youngest player to play an international series is held by Hasan Raja of Pakistan, who appeared on the pitch against Zimbabwe in 1996. His age was just 14 years 200 and 33 days.
