If Notre Dame wants to save its season, it starts with Syracuse

A road win over Syracuse would be a great start to salvaging a lost season at Notre Dame.

It wasn’t easy for Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame, but his big win on the road at Syracuse will definitely help him save his first year try at the helm at South Bend.

At 4-3, Irish fighters need two more wins over the next five to play bowling. With historic rivals Navy and Boston College remaining on the schedule, Notre Dame should be able to reach 6-6 at worst. However, there is a great opportunity for Saturday. If the Irish were to give the orange a second straight loss, it could push them into a serious spoiler situation.

Football Highlights

Keep in mind that Notre Dame’s other two matches will be played at home versus Clemson and at USC this season.

A road win over Syracuse will help change the story of Notre Dame

Although the Irish scored an impressive win over an already seeded opponent in ACC’s favorite coastal North Carolina, everyone knows the best teams in the ACC are staying in the Atlantic this season. Syracuse nearly beat Clemson at Death Valley last week. The Tigers have placed quarterback DJ Uiagalelei for Cade Klubnik. As it turns out, it worked well with little Olly Clemson.

For now, Orange remains a serious New Year’s Six-Course candidate and is desperately hoping Clemson fails to face Louisville or Miami. While that doesn’t happen, Notre Dame and possibly South Carolina can catch tigers off their toes. If Notre Dame can beat Syracuse on the road, they’ll have a real chance of pissing off Clemson at home in a few weeks. You may get…

As far as the USC game is concerned, there is no margin for error for Trojans. They need to win and do it convincingly to get any realistic shot at the college football game. USC has yet to play its rival UCLA, as well as traditional rival Notre Dame. UCLA will not be easy. Maybe it won’t be Notre Dame either? Of course, the Irish might be leaning on the orange.

Overall, Saturday’s game in Syracuse is a critical test of how the rest of the Irish season will change. If they win on the road, they’ll have out to beat Clemson at home or USC on the road. If they play the tough Orange match, they still stand a chance. If the Dino Babers bounce back and the Irish run out of luck, they could lose to Boston College or the Navy to finish 5-7.

Something must succumb in Syracuse, will the oranges be squeezed or will the jig be on the Irish?
