Social media users are sharing a video of protests against Italy’s COVID-19 mandates in October 2021 and falsely claiming that it shows recent protests by those seeking to remove the Italian government. There is no evidence that there have been such recent protests.

Examples can be seen (here) and (here).

The text in one post reads: “BOOM in ITALY. Italy’s Prime Minister Draghi cancels NATO summit ! He left Madrid to be back in Italy!️ Power is dwindling. The people of Italy are rebelling and demanding the removal of the government!”

The video shows a large crowd protesting and waving the Italian flag. However, the video was posted on Oct. 9, 2021 and shows protests against a government drive to make the COVID-19 “Green Pass” mandatory for all workers.

Italian media have featured the same video in articles describing the protest, visible (here) and (here).

The protests were held days before Italy became the first country in Europe to make all workers carry the Green Pass in an effort to accelerate vaccinations and stamp out coronavirus infections. Reuters’ reporting on this can be found ( here ).

Italy removed the green pass requirement on May 1 this year for residents and June 1 for travelers entering the country. (

Reuters could find no evidence of mass protests being held in Italy this month aimed at removing the government.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, a former European Central Bank chief, curtailed his attendance at a NATO summit in Madrid to chair a cabinet meeting as tensions rise in his multi-party coalition, with parties already jockeying for position ahead of a national election early next year. (here)

However, he denied the abrupt return was due to the coalition turmoil.

False. The video shows October 2021 protests in Italy against the mandatory green pass.
