Hundreds nabbed in O Kae Molao operations

The Gauteng police and various law enforcement agencies arrested hundreds of people during an O Kae Molao operation in Tshwane.

Under the leadership of Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, the police began the operation on Saturday, April 30 at 18:00 and continued until Sunday, May 1 at 02:00.

Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the operation was held in Mabopane and Loate precincts.

Selepe said 660 people were arrested for various crimes including 30 undocumented persons.

“We confiscated three unlicensed firearms and ammunition, drugs, marijuana, a vehicle with an engine that was tampered with, illegal mining equipment and liquor from illegal liquor outlets, among other items,” she said.

Selepe said raids by detectives were the first phase of the operation and it led to the arrest of more than 300 people.

She added that over 140 of these people were arrested for gender-based violence-related offences.

“The second phase of the operation was held by visible policing together with other law enforcement agencies through roadblocks, stop-and-searches, vehicle checkpoints and compliance at liquor outlets,” she said.

She added that over 10 illegal liquor outlets were closed downs and hundreds of litres of alcohol were confiscated.
