Tshwane mayor Randall Williams congratulated Mamelodi Sundowns after the club won its 12th Premier Soccer League (PSL) title on Wednesday, April 27.

Randall Williams congratulated “the Brazilians” for becoming the first team in South Africa to win a league title for five seasons consecutively.

Williams said Mamelodi Sundowns was undoubtedly one of the most successful teams in the country.

“We are proud that Tshwane is their home and we acknowledge that the team continuously sets the standard for professional soccer in South Africa.

“Based on the team’s continued performance of excellence over the last five years, it’s clear that Tshwane is well placed in asserting itself as the sporting capital in the country,” he said.

20-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns fan Tetelo Junior Modisakeng, from Atteridgeville, said he was happy to be alive because witnessing the greatness of Sundowns has brought joy to his heart.

Tetelo said nothing hurt him more than his favourite team failing to win the league and he appreciated Sundowns because it hasn’t put him under that stress in the last five years.

“My team no longer has competition in South Africa. From now on, we are focused on winning the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

“Fans are happy to have won the league because we’ve just won it for the fifth time in a row. We’re used to the joy of winning the league now, we’re are just glad to have set a new record,” he said.

Tetelo said he wished to see his favourite team continue to succeed in the coming years.
